The Ides of March is Upon Us!

What does that really mean? While trying to decide on a new post, I thought of this saying. We see lots of advertising using the term “March Madness.” Is that what the ides of March is all about? Chaos and madness? I have always thought it had a negative connotation but in advertising I would say mad is good. Crazy sales!! Low prices!! It’s a good thing, right? So I would say it is a good thing when talking about dieting. I am going to go crazy with my diet! I am going to lose a ridiculous amount of fat—that’s crazy!

Well, I actually had to look it up. Did you know back in Roman times the ides of March merely was a reference to the middle of the month. That’s it, the 15th of the month. Well I guess you could say the middle of the month is upon us. Look out March the 15th is coming and I am getting ready. I am going to lose 8 pounds by then. That’s right 8 pounds. That might seem a bit much for 2 weeks but you know how it is when you get as big as me. The first week is always fantastic—if you really do it right. I should be able to lose 5 pounds in the first week. Three pounds the second week might be a bit ambitious but I am going to do it! Cuz I am crazy!!

By the way, the negative connotation that comes with the ides of March came from Julius Caesar’s assassination on the 15th of March. Shakespeare’s reference in his play “Julius Caesar” “portrays the atmosphere of madness, pleasure, and pandemonium.” (from wikipedia). So that seems to sum it all up. The middle of the month is upon us and we are going to go crazy with our diets and it will be a pleasurable atmosphere.

  1. Well, I for one know you can do it! You are crazy! But it's not a diet you are upon... It is a lifestyle... A way of life... This is the first day of the rest of your life! And the rest will be full of energy, health, and goals accomplished!

  2. That's the truth, it IS a way of life!! But crap, I thought it was only me and Mary on this blog and I have said my weight out loud! Lori, don't repeat that. Is anyone else on here?
I will not hit my goal this week, but alas, I will carry on trying. I'm only a little crazy. Maybe I should be more crazy?? I don't feel like it though. We'll see.....

  3. Don't worry Nancy, it's just you me and Lori and I'll tell my weight. This ought to make you feel really good. I weigh 200. pounds and I am 5-6 inches shorter than you. Believe it or not I came back from Florida at 203.9 so I have actually taken some off already. Of course I went to Florida weighing in at 194. I would love to get down to 135 but I am taking this in small steps. My first goal is 175, then 150 then 135. I may even be happy at 150. Although I never thought I would do any kind of plastic surgery--I think I would get a tummy tuck when I get down to 135. I don't think I can un-stretch this skin. I honestly dont' think I can do enough sit-ups, crunches or what ever to flatten my tummy. I really want a waist back. It bothers me more than the boobs because a bra can put them in place.

  4. Nancy, I didn't see your weight... I'll have to go back and read more... Haha... I don't get on the scale so someone's weight doesn't make any difference to me... I h
Just want everyone to be healthy... I want all my family to be around, having fun, for a long long time:)

  5. well Mary shared, so it's fine. But speaking of height. Listen to this!! You know how your 'arm span' is supposed to equal your height? Well, Richard said I looked like an orangutan my arms were so long. so we measured. My 'arm span' is 4 inches longer!! 4 INCHES!! Either I was meant to be 6'3", or maybe I AM part orangutan??

I agree Lori. I mean to be honest, in the last 3 years, Pete and I have TOTALLY changed our eating habits! And I NEVER thought we would. I didn't want to, I loved eating that way! But now I almost ONLY cook from diet cookbooks or healthy meals. More veg than ever, and more fish, not a lot, but a lot more. I wish Mom and Kathy and Linda would try harder. And I wish Mom enjoyed cooking a little more. IfI were there, I'd cook her all kinds of healthy meals-But it seems, I LOVE to cook! LOVE!!

  6. Yeah... I know! I wish some would be better and make healthier choices. There are no shortcuts! It takes a while to get use to it, but then before you know, it's enjoyable and you notice you feel good... Really good!
You and Pete both look amazing and the diet and food choices you make are a big part of that.
Anyway, we can all encourage each other for the many many healthy years ahead

  10. National Pound Cake Day?? Who knew???
I have done yoga every day so far and kept up with my healthier eating choices. So I think I am doing well. I am tired and would love to just lay around tonight... but I have to form the habit.
Mary, keep it up! It's not easy for sure, but the tough choices will pay off in smaller clothes, more energy, and better health. :)

  11. Mary, a friend of mine told me about a website livestrong.com You create an account and input everything you eat, lifestyle, fitness and the site tracks your calories, etc.

  12. I used to use that but now I use my fitness pal. Livestrong is Lance Armstrong's website. I didn't switch because of him. I heard about this site and of course they have an app for that too. My fitness pal has a feature at the end you hit done or something and it will tell you "If you continue like today you will weigh xxx in 5 weeks." It is really encouraging on a good day.

  13. Well, I've eaten all day today. Sucky dieting day. Oh well. I mean it wasn't crap food, salad, soup, cereal for breakfast, baquette with veggies and hummus. I'm not going to worry......

  14. I've been doing pretty good. It is so freakin hard!!! But I have lost 5 pounds this week. Told you it was easy to lose a lot the first week of a diet when you are fat. That seems to be the only time it pays off. So I have one more week to lose 3 pounds. This will be a little more difficult but we shall see.
Nancy, Jackie Warner says you are allowed to cheat once a week. Of course she says one meal could be 1500 calories so I think you did just fine. At least you ate good.

  16. It's always those last few pounds that are the hardest to take off. You'll get there.
I have not been good today. I am helping John with the camper. He is very excited about me helping him but I want to play photographer. Oh well, this needs to get done and he has worked so hard on it. It is almost done. I'm sure I am getting more of a work out helping him than I would get if I played photographer.
